The Heart of Christmas (A Whiskey Creek Novel Book 7) by Brenda Novak
Just call her Christmas Eve…
Eve Harmon has always enjoyed Christmas, but this year it reminds her of everything she doesn't have. Almost all her friends are married now, and that's what Eve wants, too. Love. A husband and kids of her own. But the B and B she manages, and even Whiskey Creek, the small Gold Country town where she was born and raised, suddenly seem…confining.
Eve's worried that her future will simply be a reflection of her past. There's no one in the area she could even imagine as a husband—until a handsome stranger comes to town. Eve's definitely attracted to him, and he seems to have the same reaction to her. But his darkly mysterious past could ruin Eve's happily ever after—just when it finally seems within reach. And just when she's counting on the best Christmas of her life!

"If I was as good at feeling nothing as you seem to be, I wouldn't have any trouble divorcing my mouth from my heart. Maybe not caring is something you get better at with practice."
I loved seeing Eve stand up for herself. This is a wonderful story. The author has a way of showing making you feel for her characters. My problem was that there was too much going on at once. A ghost story, an ex con, gangs, clients with a stalker. It was too much! I wish that the author had cut down on how many different plot lines were in the story. It made it muddles and slowed down my reading. I would get bored and put it away. I would have found it much more enjoyable if it wasn't such a mess.
"He's fallen into a snow globe, Rex decided, into one of those perfect little Christmas scenes he'd peered into so often when he was a child visiting his grandmother's house."
Rex, he was complex. I couldn't tell if I liked him or not. I liked Eve, and you could tell he liked her too, but at times, I wanted to really dislike him and his behavior. Yes, he redeemed himself, but it was hard for me to really love him.
In all, this is a sweet, clean romance that will give you warm fuzzy feelings for the holidays.
